Are you eating foods that cause inflammation?
Inflammation is at the root of most disease. Autoimmune disorders, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s are all linked to chronic inflammation. When you think all these diseases are separate problems and only focus symptoms, you are not getting to the root of why the disease developed.
For example, an inflamed connective tissue is the root cause of Fibromyalgia. So you have to get to the root problem and ask what is causing this inflammation. Low-grade inflammation also aids in the aging process and I don’t know
Autoimmune disorders, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s are all linked to chronic inflammation. When you think all these diseases are separate problems and only focus symptoms, you are not getting to the root of why the disease developed.
So what causes inflammation?
The most common cause if inflammation is Leaky Gut. Think of our intestines like a fish net with small holes or spaces. Our body absorbs the nutrients out of our food and the nutrients pass through the holes and into the bloodstream. When we eat foods we are allergic to, take too many over the counter NSAID’s, consume lots of alcohol or live under constant stress, we are tearing bigger holes into the lining of our gut. The larger holes allow food particles to enter our bloodstream that has no right to be there and that’s when the inflammation starts.
The key to lowering inflammation is to eliminate the foods that irritate your body. This will vary slightly for everyone. I am allergic to gluten for example while my husband can have a little without getting a reaction. If you are unsure about what foods are triggers for your body you can eliminate the most common triggers and slowly add them back in every few days, looking for symptoms such as bloating, gas, itching, brain fog or a flare up in your current condition.
Stay away from these foods as a general rule, they are inflammatory foods:
- Refined Sugars
- Commercial Dairy
- Hydrogenated Fats
- Nightshade Vegetables including tomatoes, eggplants, bell peppers and potatoes
- Anything Processed, preservatives can be a trigger for some people.
Avoiding these foods that cause inflammation so your gut lining has time to repair. Try adding these foods into your meals to encourage your body to repair.
- Bone Broth
- Salmon or Omega 3 fatty acids
- Nuts and Seeds
- Fresh Vegetables and Fruits
- Olive and Coconut Oil
There are other Holistic ways to reduce inflammation aside from food choices, but food choices should be your main focus. Reducing stress is huge for lowering inflammation. When we relax and stop worrying our cortisol levels start to reduce and even out. Vitamin D as a supplement or direct sunlight helps our hormones get back in sync, and sleeping at least 8 hours night will give the body time to repair itself.
I also recommend probiotics to help with the candida overgrowth that is common in people with Leaky Gut. We use Prescript Assist but I know there are other good brands such as Primal Defense or Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics. By switching out a few foods and making some lifestyle changes you can reduce your inflammation in just a few days.
