How to Blog and Make Money
As my blog progresses and grows, I am getting many questions about how I run my website, how to blog and make money and the tools I use. I was completely self-taught, scrapping together youtube videos and reading articles to teach me the skills to run a website. I know the struggle of watching 5 videos and still not understanding what a sales funnel is.
Along the way, I have found some priceless people who I now follow and trust. I have found resources that pulled me forward and helped my website thrive. I want to share them with you so you don’t have to spend countless days following people who don’t have your business and website in their best interest. How to blog and make money, let’s get started! A few of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no cost to you, I get a small fee for supporting their business to help run this blog.
There are 3 basic ways to make money blogging. In summary, you can put ads on your site, use affiliate links and create products.
Ads don’t generate a lot of income unless you have a lot of traffic. It’s a nice way to make a passive income as long as the ads aren’t so intrusive they take away from your content. Don’t count on ads making you a millionaire though, you need other sources of income. Google AdSense or Mediavine are very common ad companies to use.
Using affiliate links on our site can really add up. You do have to use links to products you know and trust, otherwise, you will lose the trust of your audience. People want honest reviews of products you have tried.
Creating your own products ensures you receive the full price of the product you are offering and you can offer exactly what your heart desires to your audience. I can recommend an affiliate product but it will never be fully what is in my heart because I didn’t create it. Selling ebooks or courses you create is an excellent source of income.
The trick to making money is learning how to use the affiliate links, email marketing and how to create honest sales pages that convert. That’s where these resources come into play. I needed someone to teach me the how. I was tired of trying to learn everything myself and piece together youtube videos of various people. Below are the people and companies that I trust and I wanted to share them with you so you could find out how to blog and make money!
This course is priceless to me, Alex and Lauren from Create and Go have created this course to show bloggers how to monetize their site and start making serious money. Having been in the blogging world for many years, I haven’t found a more honest couple that gives you “how to” videos in the most layman’s terms while sharing the real struggles of blogging. They are honest! They will tell you what works and what doesn’t, they are real people who make a ton of money blogging and they have the heart to teach you to do the same. You can check out Six Figure Blogger and learn from the pros.
This course is perfect for someone who has a blog up and running, knows how to post articles on social media and is ready to start making money. This course isn’t for someone who doesn’t have their website up yet. If that’s your situation I would recommend Launch Your Blog course to get you started. Don’t waste time doing it the wrong way.
You can read my full review of the course at Six-Figure Blogger Review.
If you have a website, you need traffic! One of my top traffic sources is Pinterest and I can thank tailwind for that. Tailwind lets me pin throughout the day without having to be on the computer all day. I can schedule out my Pinterest pins to go exactly where I want them and when. It takes about 5 minutes to schedule a week or more worth of pins for my traffic. I have used boardbooster in the past and have had better success with tailwind.
If you don’t know how to use Pinterest to generate traffic and you don’t know how to create pins that will get shared…I highly suggest Pinterest Traffic Avalanche. This is another course by Create and Go to show you exactly how to use Pinterest to get the most traffic.
Everyone always told me that the money is in the email list. I had no idea what they meant until taking Six Figure Blogger and I got a chance to see how an email list can create income. The course goes into detail about what a sales funnel is and how to create one using Convertkit. I use Convertkit because it was created for bloggers by bloggers. I can easily capture emails, automate emails and sell products that I believe in with Convertkit. In the past I have used MailChimp and Mailerlite, Convertkit is by far my favorite and the easiest to use. How to blog and make money really is a numbers game and having good email marketing is key.
It’s pretty impossible to build and run a website without graphics. I am by no means a graphic designer but I get by pretty well using canva. Canva is a site where you can design any graphics or photo you need to put on your website, social media platform or create ebook covers. I use the free version of canva, still after 2 years of blogging. It has premade sizes for almost everything you would ever need including Facebook posts, Pinterest pins, ebook covers and youtube thumbnails.
Being a blogger really means you have to be a jack of all trades. Unless you have the finances to hire out tasks, you will be doing social media marketing, web design, content creation and research yourself. Ya know what though…I’m glad I learned each of these skills so I have complete control over changing my website. I don’t have to rely on hiring out jobs just to change a few graphics or tweak my Pinterest account. Knowing how to run the back end of my site really does help my personality come through and to connect with my audience in an authentic way that wouldn’t be possible if someone else was running the site.
