What are the health benefits of grounding?

Let’s get a few things straight right away. 

Grounding or earthing is about the science of protons and electrons, not about connecting with “mother earth”. 

It actually doesn’t have anything to do with new-age magic or spiritual beliefs.

It’s the same science that uses an EKG machine to measure the electricity of your heart and the same science that doctors use to measure brain waves.

Your body is electrical.

Your heart runs on and produces its own electricity. Essentially it’s a battery that knows how to recharge itself by using potassium and sodium in the cells.

Grounding or earthing is basic science. Similar to how you “plugin” your smartphone into electricity to charge.

The ground outside (or the earth) is the perfect electrical conductor and contains an endless supply of electrons. 

When the connection is made from the earth to our bare skin, an exchange takes place. Protons that produce inflammation and pain are released and electrons are absorbed.

Electrons are strong antioxidants that help to release pain and inflammation. 

Grounding or earthing is all about keeping your body electrically balanced, keeping your battery healthy and charged.

Just like the sunshine produces vitamin D in your skin, the ground can use electrons as antioxidants in your body.

Antioxidants play a huge role in reducing inflammation which weighs on your mental health.

Grounding improves circulation

Earthing or grounding has been proven to improve circulation and thin the blood which reduces blood clots.

Results indicate that grounding the human body to earth (“earthing”) during sleep reduces night-time levels of cortisol and resynchronizes cortisol hormone secretion more in alignment with the natural 24-hour circadian rhythm profile. Changes were most apparent in females. Furthermore, subjective reporting indicates that grounding the human body to earth during sleep improves sleep and reduces pain and stress. Grounding can help repair the body

Your body can repair more efficiently when inflammation is reduced using a grounding mat or earthing outside.

Another slightly larger study examined the role of grounding on post-exercise muscle damage. Researchers used both grounding patches and mats and measured creatine kinase, white blood cell count, and pain levels before and after grounding.

Blood work indicated that grounding reduced muscle damage and pain in participants. This suggests that grounding may influence healing abilities. (source)

Easy Ways to Add Grounding to Your Life

 It is actually really easy to start grounding or earthing on a regular basis. The best and easiest way to do it is by going outside in bare feet. Of course, you want to do this safely. 

Some different areas to go barefoot include in the grass, in the dirt, or in the sand at the beach. Going camping? Ditch your shoes when you find a bare spot of ground that looks safe to stand on.

You can also submerge your body in natural forms of water, such as a lake or the ocean, as well as just lying down on the grass at a park.

If you find yourself stuck inside and just can’t get out, you can purchase a grounding mat. 

Many sleep on a grounding mat or you can get a smaller one to place under your desk at work, for your feet for the health benefits of grounding.
