What are the best supplements for knee cartilage repair? Could glucosamine for runner’s knee actually work?
If you’re a runner, you know how quickly foot or knee pain can stop you in your tracks. It can be frustrating to have to take long breaks while things heal up and rest.
Maybe you are just dealing with arthritis and you have to feel your knees grind every day as you live life.
For the past few months, my husband has been running every day to every other day…at least 4 miles at a time. I was so proud of him for pushing himself and seeing him succeed.
After about 2 months he really started to feel the effects on his knees and said the pain during running was getting “unbearable”.
He complained of grinding, clicking and severe pain while running and feeling like his knees were stiff in the morning. He started putting ice on his knees after running but didn’t see much of a difference in the way they felt after a run.
As always I love to research so I dove right in looking into what I could do for him to help with supplements for knee cartilage repair and runner’s knee.
Symptoms of Runner’s Knee
- Pain when walking, running, sitting for long periods, or bending
- Pain in front of the kneecap or behind it
What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin?
Glucosamine sulfate is used by the body to help repair and create cartilage for joints. It’s a natural substance found in our bodies but often decreases with age. Aside from its ability to help rebuild and lubricate joints, it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory and helps to repair leaky gut.
You can get glucosamine in small amounts by drinking bone broth but for most people with joint issues, you would be better off taking a supplement to ensure you are getting enough.
Chondroitin is often used in tandem with glucosamine and helps to rebuild connective tissue in the body. It grabs water from the body and helps to lubricate the joints and adds flexibility to the tissues. If you are aging and feeling it in your joints, this is a great supplement to add.
Other benefits of Glucosamine and Chondroitin:
- Decreases arthritis pain
- Improves wound healing
- Helps treat tendonitis
- Repairs leaky gut
- Aids in digestion
Our Experience with Glucosamine for Runner’s Knee
My husband was getting to the point of not being able to run anymore because of the knee pain. I knew if we didn’t do something quickly he would wear out all the cartilage in his knees.
I ordered a bottle of glucosamine/chondroitin but honestly didn’t expect it to help much. How could a supplement actually stop severe pain during a run?
After receiving the glucosamine my husband started taking them. Literally, after 3 days on the supplements, he said he noticed a huge decrease in the runner’s knee.
After a week on the supplement, my husband was back to running 4.5 miles per day with no pain at all!
Taking this supplement was the only change he made in his lifestyle at the time.
I was shocked. Now don’t get me wrong, I love supplements but I have never seen a supplement work as magically as this did. Most supplements are for long-term improvement and support.
I have never seen a supplement work so quickly to stop joint pain.
After looking into the health benefits of glucosamine/chondroitin I am more than happy to stay on the supplements regardless of knee pain or not. The benefits of helping to seal a leaky gut are promising and it has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
As far as supplements for knee cartilage repair, I can’t recommend glucosamine/chondroitin enough.
This is the exact brand I got for him that is working so well Glucosamine/Chondroitin
I will continue to recommend glucosamine for runner’s knee to all who are in pain.
