What Exactly is SIBO?

SIBO is short for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or an infection in your small gut. Normally your stomach acid keeps SIBO in check but having low stomach acid can allow bacteria to grow out of control.

The small bowel is where most of your food is absorbed and it’s the longest part of your digestive system.  Bad bacteria can actually block nutrients from being absorbed properly leading to vitamin deficiencies and inflammation.

The large bowel is where most of the bacteria should reside so having an overabundance of bacteria in the small bowel isn’t normal.

Bacteria love to feed on carbs and sugars and can reproduce quickly. This can cause gas and bloating, especially toward the evening after the food has had time to sit in your gut. This is why evening time can be especially miserable with gas and bloating.

It’s estimated that over 80% of people dealing with IBS actually have SIBO as they share similar symptoms. When SIBO is misdiagnosed and left untreated it can lead to weight loss, nutritional deficiencies and a compromised immune system.

What Causes SIBO?

There are multiple culprits of small bacterial infections but a few stand out above the rest.

Low Stomach Acid

Stomach acid is responsible for activating enzymes to digest your food and killing off bad pathogens. If you have low stomach acid your probably not digesting your food properly and you are leaving yourself open to infections. Having acid reflex does not indicate an adequate amount of stomach acid.

Your Food Choices

Bacteria love to eat carbs and sugars and will starve without the presence of them. If you spend all day eating things the bad bacteria love to eat, they will multiply out of control. Meals filled with gluten, preservatives, and alcohol also break down the gut over time which can lead to a compromised immune system and leaky gut. The composition of your gut bacteria heavily relies on the food you are eating.

Constipation

Not dealing with slow moving bowels or being constantly constipated can allow bad bacteria to reproduce quickly and even begin to ferment old food. If you are constipated, try adding lots of fresh water to make sure you are well hydrated.

SIBO Natural Treatment

Symptoms of a SIBO infection can be treated with courses of antibiotics, Rifaximin to be specific. New research has found that treating gut infections with natural herbal antibiotics may be just as effective if not more than regular antibiotics. Oregano oil, berberine extract, wormwood oil, lemon, balm oil and Indian barberry root extract are all mentioned in the study.

Along with using herbal antibiotics, eliminating the food source for the bacteria can keep them from repopulating causing them to starve out.

Eating Low Fodmap is the most effective way to eliminate the food source for bad bacteria.
