Have you considered 5-HTP for depression and anxiety?
Everyone has stressful times in life and sometimes it’s hard to pull up out of it and regain your happiness. I know I have been there. I had one of the hardest times of my life this past year and it wasn’t always easy to muster up some joy.
Struggling with anxiety and depression on a daily basis affects more than just you. It can seem like a dark hole that you are attempting to climb out of but for every 3 steps you take, you slide back a few more. This article contains affiliate links which provide us a small fee at no cost to you.
The struggle is real for many.
Low Serotonin can cause depression and anxiety
Finding a way to manage your anxiety without prescriptions is a smart idea since many can increase the risk of suicide and depression instead of taking it away.
There is a place for cleaning up your diet, checking for other ongoing health issues such as gut infections and cutting out junk food from your life in order to reduce anxiety and depression.
Certain foods can help lift depression and anxiety but sometimes you need a little something more to move you in the right direction.
I came across 5-HTP years ago when researching for help with migraines. Low serotonin can trigger migraines in some people. This supplement has a lot of benefits but what actually is it?
5-HTP is an amino acid that occurs naturally in the body. It can be found in the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia. It has been recognized as a precursor to serotonin and melatonin aiding in a better mood and sleep.
It’s an L-tryptophan which is an essential amino acid found in protein-rich foods and dairy products. Sometimes it’s hard to get all the L-tryptophan just from your food, especially if you are not absorbing your food well or don’t eat these particular foods.
Low serotonin and melatonin have been associated with weight gain, mood disorders, cravings, depression, sleep disorders, and other health issues.
If your gut is in bad shape due to candida or bad gut bacteria, you won’t make the proper amount of serotonin, which is made in the gut. Gut infections can be a huge cause of depression and anxiety.
Although 5-HTP can’t kill a gut infection, it can give you the boost you need to clean up your food choices and regain some ground mentally.

There have been countless studies to document the benefits of 5-HTP for depression and anxiety as well as weight loss and improved sleep. We all know that sleeping better does contribute to a better mood and fewer cravings in general.
5-HTP for weight loss is best taken before a meal to help with appetite suppression.
My experience with 5-HTP
My personal experience with 5-HTP for depression and anxiety has been a positive one. I have noticed increased mood shortly after taking it and I did actually sleep better at night.
I haven’t taken it long term because I was underweight at the time from bad leaky gut and it decreased my appetite so much I didn’t feel like eating. Maybe you need to lose weight but I didn’t so I decreased how much 5-HTP I was taking.
I did notice a reduction in my migraines while taking it but I do have histamine migraines so it didn’t cut them out completely.
When picking out your 5-HTP it’s important to choose a brand with purity of ingredients.
We love this brand of 5-HTP because it has added b6 to assist in the conversion to serotonin.
There are times in life when you need a boost in your mood so you can begin to tackle other health issues or problems. 5-HTP can give you an increased mood which creates momentum for other changes.
Overall I think 5-HTP for depression and anxiety is a smart choice before going to prescription medications. You should note, you can not take both 5-HTP and antidepression medication at the same time. It can cause serotonin syndrome and is extremely dangerous.
If you are on a prescription medication for depression or anxiety you must consult your doctor before trying 5-HTP.
